The Ins and Outs of EGFR Asymmetry
The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) regulates cell proliferation in many tissues. A new structure of the Drosophila EGFR presented by Alvarado et al. (2010) reveals an asymmetric dimer with the ligand bound to only one subunit. The structure provides a rationale for the receptor's negative cooperativity and necessitates a reconsideration of models for activation of human EGFR.

Virus takes the actin express V iruses typically hitchhike around the cytoplasm on microtubules. Ohkawa et al. reveal that one type of virus can travel within the cell using actin fi laments. Once baculoviruses break into a cell, they need a lift to the nucleus so their genetic material can be copied. However, these viruses don’t require microtubules for the journey. Ohkawa et al. investigated ...
متن کاملIns and Outs of E2Fs
Precise control of the mitotic cell cycle is a critical feature of eukaryotic life. In humans, mutations in cell cycle regulatory genes lead to the uncontrolled cell proliferation and tumor formation associated with the most dreaded of all diseases, cancer. E2F transcription factors are key components of an elaborate mechanism of cell cycle control in higher eukaryotes. For example, the promote...
متن کاملThe ins and outs of phospholipid asymmetry in the plasma membrane: roles in health and disease.
A common feature of all eukaryotic membranes is the non-random distribution of different lipid species in the lipid bilayer (lipid asymmetry). Lipid asymmetry provides the two sides of the plasma membrane with different biophysical properties and influences numerous cellular functions. Alteration of lipid asymmetry plays a prominent role during cell fusion, activation of the coagulation cascade...
متن کاملThe Ins and Outs of Anthrax Toxin
Anthrax is a severe, although rather rare, infectious disease that is caused by the Gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis. The infectious form is the spore and the major virulence factors of the bacterium are its poly-γ-D-glutamic acid capsule and the tripartite anthrax toxin. The discovery of the anthrax toxin receptors in the early 2000s has allowed in-depth studies on the...
